The Yamaha FZS600 Fazer (1998–2004) is a 599cc inline‑four engined sport tourer that succeeded the YZF600R Thundercat and was later replaced by the Yamaha FZ6 Fazer.
The FZS600 Fazer was produced from 1998 to 2004, using a detuned YZF600R Thundercat motor for stronger mid‑range performance.
It delivered 95hp, 61Nm of torque and weighed around 189 kg dry with a six‑speed gearbox and tubular steel frame.
The bike was discontinued due to failing to meet Euro‑2 emissions regulations and was replaced by the Yamaha FZ6 Fazer.
Common owner‑reported issues include:
- Weak front sprocket nut that can loosen or fail (if buying one 2nd hand check the nut hasn't been welded to the shaft!)
- Occasional regulator/rectifier and generator failures
- The Fazer needs periodic carb balancing
- Problems with the HT leads and fouled spark plugs
- Petrol tanks deforming and fuel starvation problems due to a blocked tank air inlet
