The BMW R1100 RT is a sport-touring motorcycle produced between 1995 and 2001, designed to offer a balance of comfort, performance and practicality for long-distance riders.
Powered by a 1,085 cc, air/oil-cooled, horizontal twin engine (commonly referred to as the boxer engine) it generates around 90 horsepower and 92 Nm of torque.
The bike features a 5-speed gearbox, shaft drive and integrated BMW Telelever front suspension and Paralever rear suspension, designed to improve handling and comfort especially over long journeys.
The R1100 RT is known for its wind protection, providing an adjustable full fairing and large windshield for better aerodynamics which makes it well-suited for touring.
It also comes equipped with ABS brakes as a standard feature, adding a layer of safety for riders.

While the R1100 RT is generally reliable, several common weaknesses have been reported by owners. These include:

  • • Electrical issues are frequent, particularly with the charging system where the alternator and voltage regulator may fail leading to battery problems or poor charging.
  • • The fuel pump can sometimes fail or become clogged, resulting in fuel delivery issues.
  • • Additionally, the clutch slave cylinder can fail, causing loss of clutch function.
  • • The bikes final drive splines (used to connect the rear wheel) also need regular lubrication to prevent wear and failure.
  • • The Telelever front suspension can be expensive to repair if damaged and some owners report issues with the ABS system, particularly with age.
