The Yamaha FZR400 Genesis 1WG was a compact, high revving sports motorcycle produced in the late 1980s and known for its advanced engineering and sharp handling.

The bike was never officially released in the UK by Yamaha and was (mostly) only available as a grey import which made parts availability and documentation (service manuals, owners handbooks etc) more challenging for owners.

The FZR400 1WG was powered by a 399cc liquid‑cooled inline‑four and featured Yamaha’s early Genesis engine architecture, aluminium Deltabox frame and a rev limit around 14,000 rpm which gave it a reputation for lively performance and precise cornering.

Typical output was approximately 60bhp with a dry weight near 160kg.

Common owner reported issues include:

  • - Carburettor wear and tuning sensitivity
  • - Ageing regulator/rectifiers, CDI's and other electrical components
  • - Deteriorating cooling system hoses
  • - Corrosion in the exhaust collector
  • - Suspension components also often require refurbishment due to age

As the bike was mostly a grey import and never officially released in the UK by Yamaha, sourcing spares can be difficult (especially parts like exhausts).
However, there are LOADS of used parts available online from motorcycle breakers.
