The Yamaha YZF-R1 5PW, introduced for 2002 and continued into 2003, is a landmark 1000cc superbike that helped redefine the liter class sportbike category.
Powered by a liquid-cooled, inline-four engine displacing 998cc and delivering around 152 bhp, it features a six-speed gearbox and a wet clutch driving a chain-final drive.
Yamahas ingenious hybrid fuel-injection system used vacuum-controlled throttle slides for smooth fuelling with carb like feel at a time when injected bikes were often jerky.
Built on a lightweight Deltabox frame with improved suspension and sharper geometry, the 5PW balances explosive power with agility and road holding that is still impressive by modern standards.

The 5PW was liked for its finely balanced chassis, responsive throttle and high-revving character.
It remains desirable as a used superbike for riders seeking raw performance without extensive electronic aids.

However, despite its strengths, the 5PW has several known weaknesses and failure points. These include:

  • • The gearbox, especially second gear, has a reputation for weakness and can jump out of gear or show slippage under hard acceleration if worn.
  • • Electrical gremlins are reported around the main wiring connector and charging system.
  • • Stator and regulator/rectifier are failure points even on well cared for/low mileage bikes.
  • • Cooling fan operation issues and high idle complaints have been mentioned.
  • • Other common older-bike concerns include EXUP valve seizing, corrosion of connectors and general wear associated with age (e.g. suspension seals, hoses).
