The Kawasaki ZRX1200R is a classic big-bore naked roadster produced in the early 2000s (2001–2007), known for blending retro styling with modern-era performance.
It pays homage to Kawasakis iconic 1970s-80s muscle bikes while offering capable everyday performance and relaxed ergonomics.
Powered by a liquid-cooled, inline-four four-stroke engine with 1,164cc displacement, the ZRX1200R uses four Keihin CVK36 carburetors feeding a DOHC head and delivers around 122 hp and ~80 lb-ft of torque. It drives a five speed gearbox and chain drive to the rear wheel.
The bike rides on a double-cradle tubular steel frame with 43 mm conventional front forks and twin KYB rear shocks, both adjustable for preload and damping.
Braking comes from twin 310mm front discs with six-piston calipers and a single rear 250mm disc. It’s a medium-weight machine at approximately 223–224kg dry with a 790mm seat height and 19 litre fuel tank.

However, there are some known weaknesses and failure points when buying. These include:

• • Early models can exhibit a notchy gearbox that feels less smooth than modern bikes.
• • The carburetors can develop issues with rich running or flooding if float valves age or settings drift, requiring rebuilds or synchronization.
• • Forks are often described as relatively soft for spirited cornering and the bikes weight can make handling feel cumbersome compared to lighter rivals.
• • Fasteners and exhaust components on early steel-equipped bikes are prone to corrosion over time.
• • There have been rumours of swing arms developing cracks and stress fractures, although this may be caused by excessive wheelies?
• • More seriously, some engines from this era are known to suffer automatic cam chain tensioner wear or failure, which can lead to noisy operation and potential clutch basket damage if left unchecked, a common preventative upgrade is to install a manual tensioner.

Checking for any carburetor condition, tensioner noise on start-up and overall chassis component wear is recommended when buying or maintaining a ZRX1200R.
