How to Modify the Affiliate Link Code
This page contains information for affiliates who would like to modify the links we provide or who would like to link to products or sections that we don't provide affiliate links or banners for.
If you have basic understanding of HTML & dynamic links, this page will help you with the parameters you need to change to modify the affiliate links.
If you have no experience with HTML or dynamic links, please read through this page a couple of times & contact us if you have any questions (honestly, it's not as complicated as it 1st looks!).
IMPORTANT!
Although our website catalogue uses 'SEO friendly' links (pages usually ending in .html) for most visitors, these links are modified & changed for the benefit of search engines & visitors.
These links cannot be used for affiliate links as the affiliate parameters cannot be passed on using these links.
The example of a modified SEO Friendly URL below is incorrect & WOULD NOT pass on the affiliate information:
http://www.whitedogbikes.com/item--Bike-Tek-6v-and-12v-Motorcycle-Battery-Charger--biketekcharger.html&affl=my-affiliate-code
Also, the dynamic URL's parameters are CaSe sEnSiTiVe (so please make sure you copy any product or category reference parameters exactly!).
The examples below show the difference between the SEO friendly URL (that can't be used for affiliate links) & the actual dynamic URL (that should be used for affiliate links):
SEO Friendly URL:
http://www.whitedogbikes.com/item--Bike-Tek-6v-and-12v-Motorcycle-Battery-Charger--biketekcharger.html
Actual Dynamic URL:
http://www.whitedogbikes.com/cgi-bin/ccp51/cp-app.cgi?rrc=N&affl=&pg=prod&ref=biketekcharger
The dynamic link/URL above is a shortened version that links directly to the product (it doesn't contain any affiliate parameters).
To modify the dynamic URL for your affiliate links, you'll need 3 things:
1) The page code
(depending on if your linking to a product or a category)
2) The product or category reference code (depending on if your linking to a product or a category)
3) Your affiliate code
Page Code
The blue text below is the part of the dynamic URL that needs to be changed for linking to products or categories.
If you are linking directly to a product, you'll need to use the following code in the link:
pg=prod&ref=
If you are linking to a category in our website, you'll need to use the following code in the link:
pg=cat&ref=
To tell the difference between the 2 using the SEO friendly URL's, categories start with the code 'www.whitedogbikes.com/cat--'.
Products start with the code 'www.whitedogbikes.com/item--'.
The product or category reference code
The product or category reference code can be found at the end of the SEO friendly URL, between the '.html' & after the last '--'.
In the dynamic URL's (normally links with symbols like ? or & in them), the product or category reference code can be found on the end of the link, just after the '&ref=' bit.
The example product reference code from an SEO friendly link is shown in blue below:
http://www.whitedogbikes.com/item--Bike-Tek-6v-and-12v-Motorcycle-Battery-Charger--biketekcharger.html
The example category reference code from an SEO friendly link is shown in blue below:
http://www.whitedogbikes.com/cat--Motorcycle-Helmets--motorcyclehelmets.html
The example product reference code from a Dynamic URL/link is shown in blue below:
http://www.whitedogbikes.com/cgi-bin/ccp51/cp-app.cgi?rrc=N&affl=&pg=prod&ref=biketekcharger
The example category reference code from a Dynamic URL/link is shown in blue below:
http://www.whitedogbikes.com/cgi-bin/ccp51/cp-app.cgi?rrc=N&affl=&pg=cat&ref=motorcyclehelmets
Your affiliate Code
Your affiliate code is the code you use to sign into the affiliate area.
Making the Link...................
The basic product affiliate URL is (the parts in blue small caps are the parts that have been changed, the parts in BLUE CAPITAL LETTERS, need to be changed):
http://www.whitedogbikes.com/cgi-bin/ccp51/cp-app.cgi?rrc=N&affl=YOUR-AFFILIATE-CODE&pg=prod&ref=PRODUCT-REFERENCE-CODE
The basic category affiliate URL is (the parts in blue small caps are the parts that have been changed, the parts in BLUE CAPITAL LETTERS , need to be changed):
http://www.whitedogbikes.com/cgi-bin/ccp51/cp-app.cgi?rrc=N&affl=YOUR-AFFILIATE-CODE&pg=cat&ref=CATEGORY-REFERENCE-CODE
Examples.......
The product example below is made using the following parameters:
-Affiliate code (this is an example code, you'd put your own affiliate code here!): whitedogwoof
Product: Bike Tek 6 volt/12 Volt battery charger (product code: biketekcharger)
URL would be (the blue text contains the modified parts):
http://www.whitedogbikes.com/cgi-bin/ccp51/cp-app.cgi?rrc=N&affl=whitedogwoof&pg=prod&ref=biketekcharger
The category example below is made using the following parameters:
-Affiliate code (this is an example code, you'd put your own affiliate code here!): whitedogwoof
Category: Motorcycle Helmets Category (category code: motorcyclehelmets)
URL would be (the blue text contains the modified parts):
http://www.whitedogbikes.com/cgi-bin/ccp51/cp-app.cgi?rrc=N&affl=whitedogwoof&pg=cat&ref=motorcyclehelmets
W3C Validation....
To make the links W3C valid, you would need to subsitiute the '&' sign in the URL for the HTML code '&'.
So the W3C valid version of the above category example URL would be:
http://www.whitedogbikes.com/cgi-bin/ccp51/cp-app.cgi?rrc=N&affl=whitedogwoof&pg=cat&ref=motorcyclehelmets
Please note-You should only use '&' instead of '&' in the source code of the site, using '&' instead of '&' in text format or in text based emails may cause problems or errors!
