About this item.....
Straight non-detergent engine oil for vintage motorcycle engines.
Part of the Fuchs-Silkolene Classics range.
Silkolene Classic oils are blended using modern base stocks and additives to suit the the requirements of older motorcycles, cars and other vintage engines.
Classic Donnington 40 straight oil is a non-detergent oil that is ideal for very old engines with total loss lubrication systems where engine speeds are low and operating temperatures are moderate.

Silkolene Donnington 40 is a precisely and carefully controlled and blended product that is manufactured to internationally recognised specifications and is designed to match the viscosity grades and specifications recommended by the engine manufacturers in the early part of the 20th century.Viscosity:

Which oil should I use in a 1971 classic Triumph Bonneville 650. I have been using a straight 50 monograde oil? Answer:
You would need a straight 40, non detergent oil like Rock Oil Classic 40 for a 650 Bonneville as they have a sludge trap (not a proper oil filter).
Also, a straight 40 (SAE 40) is generally better for use in the UK as its slightly thinner then an SAE 50 oil and will circulate round the engine easier (although due to the way the Bonnie oil tank and pump work you will still need to thoroughly need to warm the engine before riding). Straight 50 oils are more suited to Bonnevilles that are used for racing and use in warmer climates.
Hi, which oil would you recommend for an old rotavator without oil filter. I want SAE 40 viscosity. I understand that modern oils are designed to carry debris to the filter, but I want it to leave debris in the sump? Answer:
If you havent got a proper, paper filter in the rotavator, you will need a Classic (straight) oil like Silkolene Donnington 40 as they normally dont contain detergents (the detergents in oils are what washes the dirt and debris into the oil filter).
Whats the best oil I can use in a 1968 BSA 500 Royal Star? Answer:
For a 1968 BSA Royal Star engine we would recommend a straight 40 classic oil like Silkolene Donnington 40.
There is no real best oil for most of the old clunky bikes as there from a time when there was only 1 oil spec and lack of proper paper oil filter means the engine would not be able to cope with the detergents in modern (multigrade) oils.
